Why Do We Dream?
There is no single, settled answer to why humans dream. Sleep science has produced several evidence-informed theories, but none is a complete or universally accepted explanation.
Dreaming occurs across sleep stages but is most vivid and most frequently recalled from REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, during which brain activity in some regions resembles a waking state even though the body is largely paralysed. Dreaming also occurs, less vividly and less frequently, during NREM sleep.
Competing Theories
- Memory consolidation - the idea that dreaming is linked to the brain processing and consolidating memories and learning from the day.
- Emotion processing - the idea that dreaming helps regulate or process emotional experience, sometimes framed as a kind of overnight emotional rehearsal.
- Threat simulation theory - the idea that dreaming, and threatening dream content specifically, may function as a rehearsal for responding to danger.
- Activation-synthesis - an older neuroscience-led theory proposing that dreams arise from the brain trying to make sense of largely random activity generated during sleep.
These theories are not mutually exclusive, and each has both supporting evidence and unresolved criticisms. None of them supports decoding a specific dream’s content into a specific meaning - they describe why dreaming may occur in general, not what any one dream “means.”
What We Still Don’t Know
Basic questions remain genuinely open in dream research: why dream content takes the specific form it does, why most dreams are forgotten within minutes of waking, and why dream vividness and recall vary so much between individuals. Where this site discusses a specific dream theme, it aims to be clear about which parts are supported by findings like these, and which parts are theory, folklore, or reflection.
