Why Do I Forget My Dreams?
Forgetting the vast majority of your dreams is the normal outcome, not a sign that something is wrong. Most dream content fades within minutes of waking unless something interrupts that process - and there’s a plausible, if only partial, explanation for why.
A Chemical Explanation
During REM sleep, levels of norepinephrine - a neurotransmitter closely involved in alertness and in encoding new memories for later recall - drop substantially, as discussed in What Happens in the Brain During Dreams?. Some sleep researchers, including J. Allan Hobson, have proposed that this reduced norepinephrine activity may leave dream experiences poorly encoded into long-term memory in the first place, rather than the dream being normally encoded and then separately forgotten afterward. Under this view, the problem isn’t memory retrieval so much as the memory barely being laid down to begin with.
Everyday Factors That Matter Too
Alongside this neurochemical picture, ordinary waking habits affect how much of a dream survives into memory. Moving straight into the demands of the morning - an alarm, immediately getting up, checking a phone - tends to overwrite or crowd out a dream memory very quickly. Waking naturally, lying still for a moment, or being woken directly out of REM sleep (rather than deeper NREM sleep) are all associated with better dream recall. What This Doesn’t Mean
