What Happens in the Brain During Dreams?

Dreaming, particularly during REM sleep, coincides with a distinctive pattern of brain activity - not a simple “brain switching off,” but a shift in which systems are active and which are relatively quiet.

Which Regions Are More Active

Neuroimaging research has found heightened activity during REM sleep in visual and sensory association areas (consistent with vivid dream imagery), and in limbic and paralimbic regions, including the amygdala, which is closely tied to emotional processing. At the same time, parts of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex - associated with planning, logical reasoning, and reflective self-awareness during waking life - show reduced activity during REM sleep. Shifting Brain Chemistry

Brain chemistry also shifts distinctly during REM sleep. Levels of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter linked to activating cortical regions, rise, while levels of norepinephrine and serotonin - both more associated with alert, waking-style regulation - drop. This particular chemical profile is part of several neuroscience-based models of dreaming, including the influential activation-synthesis framework developed by researchers J. Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley, which proposed that dream content arises from the brain trying to interpret this internally generated activity.

What This Doesn’t Explain

This general picture - which regions activate, which quiet down, how brain chemistry shifts - is well supported by neuroimaging and neurochemical research. It’s a much shakier step from there to claiming this explains the specific content of any individual dream. The neuroscience describes conditions under which vivid, emotionally charged, logic-light dreaming becomes likely; it doesn’t decode what a particular dream is “about.”
