What Is Threat Simulation Theory?
Threat simulation theory proposes that dreaming - and threatening dream content specifically - may function as an evolved mechanism for rehearsing threat recognition and avoidance in a safe, simulated setting, drawing on the kinds of dangers that would have mattered most across human evolutionary history.
What the Theory Proposes
Under this account, dreams that involve being chased, attacked, or needing to escape aren’t random noise - they’re the brain running a low-stakes simulation of exactly the situations natural selection would have rewarded us for being prepared for. The theory predicts that threat content should be common in dreams generally, and more frequent or intense during periods when a person has faced real threats or elevated danger.
Who Developed It
The theory was formalised by Finnish cognitive scientist and philosopher Antti Revonsuo, most notably in a 2000 paper, “The reinterpretation of dreams: An evolutionary hypothesis of the function of dreaming,” published in Behavioral and Brain Sciences. It sits within a broader evolutionary-psychology approach to explaining mental phenomena in terms of their ancestral adaptive value.
Historical Context
Threat simulation theory emerged as an alternative to two very different earlier framings: Freud’s psychoanalytic model, which treated dream content as disguised wish-fulfilment, and activation-synthesis theory, which treated dream content as the brain’s attempt to make sense of largely random neural activity during sleep. Revonsuo’s account instead proposed a specific, testable adaptive function.
What Evidence Exists
Supporters point to the consistent, cross-cultural prevalence of threat content - being chased, attacked, or in danger - among the most commonly reported themes in large dream-content studies (see Dreams About Being Chased). Some studies have also found that children and adults who have experienced genuine waking threats show elevated threat-related dream content afterward, which proponents argue is consistent with a rehearsal function.
What Criticisms Exist
Critics note that the theory is difficult to falsify directly, that it doesn’t explain the large proportion of dreams with no threat content at all, and that a correlation between real-world threat exposure and threat-themed dreams doesn’t by itself establish an adaptive rehearsal function - the same pattern would also be consistent with simpler explanations, such as general emotional processing or memory consolidation of a stressful event.
How the Theory Is Viewed Today
Threat simulation theory is treated as one of several serious, still-debated functional theories of dreaming, rather than a settled consensus.
