Why Do Lucid Dreams Happen?
Lucid dreaming appears to involve a distinctive, in-between state of brain activity - closer to ordinary REM dreaming than to full wakefulness, but with one important difference in the regions most associated with self-awareness.
A Hybrid State of Consciousness
Research using EEG, including work by researcher Ursula Voss and colleagues, has found a distinctive pattern of brain activity during lucid dreaming compared with ordinary REM dreams - notably increased activity in frontal brain regions associated with self-reflection and metacognition (thinking about one’s own thinking), alongside the general REM sleep pattern described in What Happens in the Brain During Dreams?. This has led some researchers to describe lucid dreaming as a hybrid state, combining features of REM sleep with a degree of waking-like self-awareness that ordinary dreaming doesn’t have.
How Common Is It?
Survey research suggests that a majority of people report having experienced at least one lucid dream at some point in their life, though frequent or regular lucid dreaming - happening often enough to be a routine experience - is considerably less common and, for many people, only comes with deliberate practice. As with other areas of dream recall, self-reported frequency is also affected by how much attention someone pays to their dreams generally, which makes it hard to pin down an exact, universal figure.
What This Doesn’t Explain
This account describes a plausible neural signature associated with lucid dreaming, not a complete explanation of why it happens to some people spontaneously, why it can be cultivated through practice in others, or why some dreamers experience it far more often than others.
