Dreams About Strangers: Meaning, Psychology and Why It Happens
Not every person in a dream is someone the dreamer knows - but dream strangers are less “invented” than they might seem, and often carry a specific, if hard to pin down, sense of significance.

Where Dream Strangers Might Come From

Some researchers have proposed that even apparently invented faces may be drawn, at least partly, from people glimpsed only briefly in waking life - a stranger passed on the street, a face seen once in a crowd - reassembled by the brain into what feels like an entirely new person. This specific “recombined face” idea remains a less certain, less thoroughly established finding than the basic frequency data above.
Possible Psychological Interpretations
A stranger who feels significant, or who carries a specific role (a guide, a warning, a threat), is sometimes read popularly as representing a quality or feeling the dreamer is currently processing, detached from any specific real person - a way for the dream to explore something without the specificity of a known face attached to it.
